Amber Heard / Aquaman: “I never did a movie where I stayed that dry!” [Exclusive Interview]

 Johnny Depp’s ex-wife, Amber Heard dives into the superhero universe, she teams up with Jason Momoa in Aquaman (December 21^st).Immersed in Atlantis with power and freedom , the 32-year-old actress returns to her Justice League role. Interview at The  London Hotel … Hollywood!

Can you tell us a bit about the dynamics between your Mera character and the hero of the movie: Aquaman who rules Atlantis?

Amber Heard: Initially between Mera and Aquaman, it’s rather tense. They are very different and when one wants to impose the other is struggling to bend and vice versa. But if their two personalities make sparks, but are forced to unite their destiny … Their initial reluctance evolves quickly and overcoming many obstacles, they will eventually come closer. Until a scene that I will not reveal and that will be the culminating point in which they join forces and understand that they are one.

Does Mera have red hair in the comics like you in the movie?

Amber Heard: On the physical appearance, it was very important for me to look like the character of the comic. And I did not dye my hair red but I wear a lot of wigs!

More than dialogues, this role requires technical abilities?

Amber Heard: I had to wear a harness all day long with a whole arsenal of cables … When you shoot these elaborate action scenes that involve chases  in an empty room, covered with blue paint being hoisted in the air with technicians who you maneuver as they please, to say that we find it  a bit weird!

So you were only rarely in the water?

Amber Heard: Sometimes, anyway. But in fact I must say that I was rather perched on high heels with a bathing capon the head and a harness so nothing very sexy. But as ironic and paradoxical as it may seem, I never did in which I stay that … dry! It was only towards the end of the shoot, where our scenes were supposed to be on earth that I was sitting on a stool and I was being watered all the time so that I looked wet! I do not know any other woman who had to be so drunk to do her job (laughs)

What is your relationship with the ocean on a daily basis? Are you like a fish in the water?

Amber Heard :Jason is a real fish. I’m the opposite, I love going to the beach but I do not feel at all the need to swim!

Mera,your character has supernatural powers, but can also be very human. Is the balance between the two easy to find?

Amber Heard: No, it’s a delicate balance to make a human being superhuman. It’s a bit like living in an alternative reality where you have to position yourself and hold on to a certain humanity.

Nicole Kidman plays your queen, did she play the guides since the filming took place in Australia?

Amber Heard :No, she was very focused on her job and did not really have the time. But I love Australia so much that at the end of the shooting, I decided to stay some time.

Pouvez-vous nous révéler un peu la dynamique entre votre personnage et le héros du film :Aquaman ?

Amber Heard: Au départ entre Mera et Aquaman, c’est plutôt tendu. Ils sont très différents et lorsque l’un se montre fort l’autre est faible et vice-versa. Mais leurs deux personnalités font des étincelles, et forces à unir leurs destin…Mais leur parcours évolue vite et en dépassant de nombreux obstacles, ils vont finir par se rapprocher. Jusqu’à une scène que je ne vais pas dévoiler et qui va être le point culminant ou ils joignent leurs forces et donc comprennent qu’ils ne font qu’un.

Est-ce que Mera a des cheveux rouges dans la bande-dessinée comme vous dans le film ?

Amber Heard: Sur l’apparence physique, il était très important pour moi de ressembler au personnage de la bande-dessinée. Et je ne me suis pas teint les cheveux en rouge mais je porte beaucoup de perruques !

Plus que les dialogues, ce rôle repose sur des prouesses techniques ?

Amber Heard: Je devais porter un harnais toute la journée avec tout un arsenal de câbles…Lorsqu’on tourne ces scènes d’action élaborées qui impliquent des moments d’actions, de poursuites dans une pièce vide, recouverte de peinture bleue en étant hissée en l’air avec des techniciens qui vous manœuvrent à leur guide, autant dire que c’est une expérience carrément bizarre !

Donc vous n’étiez que rarement dans l’eau ?

Amber Heard: Tout à fait, des fois quand même. Mais en fait je dois dire que j’étais plutôt perchée sur des hauts talons avec un bonnet de bain sur la tête et donc un harnais franchement tout cela n’est pas très  sexy .Mais aussi ironique et paradoxal que cela puisse paraitre , je n’ai jamais tourner un film dans lequel j’ai été aussi…sèche ! Ce n’est que vers la fin du tournage, où nos scènes étaient sensées être sur terre que la on m’asseyait sur un tabouret et on m’arrosait tout le temps afin que j’ai l’air d’être mouillée ! Je ne sais quelle autre femme que moi ait pu être autant arrosée pour faire son travail (rires)

Quel est votre rapport avec l’océan au quotidien, êtes-vous comme un poisson dans l’eau ?

Amber Heard: Jason est un véritable poisson. Moi c’est le contraire, j’adore aller à la plage mais je ne ressens pas du tout le besoin de me baigner !

Mera, votre personnage a des pouvoirs surnaturels, mais peut aussi se montrer très humaines. L’équilibre entre les deux est-il évident ?

Amber Heard: Non c’est une balance délicate que de rendre humain un personnage qui est surhumain. C’est un peu comme vivre dans une réalité alternative ou il faut malgré tout se positionner et s’accrocher à une certaine humanité.

Nicole Kidman joue votre reine, a-t-elle joue les guides puisque le tournage s’est passe en Australie ?

Amber Heard: Non elle était très concentrée sur son travail et n’avait pas franchement le temps. Mais j’ai adore l’Australie si bien qu’a la fin du tournage, j’ai décidé d’y restée quelques temps.
