Joe Mantegna (Criminal Minds): “In my 49-year career, I did not feel like working a single day! “[Exclusive Interview]

At the age of 70, Joe Mantegna conveys a message of wisdom on Criminal Minds. Calm and serenity, with three hundred episodes and soon fifty years of career, the actor maintains the balance on the set.

“Criminal Minds” has been a huge international success for fourteen years. What distinguishes this series to allow it to have such a strong audience?

Joe Mantegna:  I think the ensemble aspect of the show is important too because it’s not a show that revolves around one character. Many shows, whether its Magnum PI or House, shows that are named after that central character- if you lose that character, you are basically rip the heart out of that show. We’ve had many changes within the groves of meters? Some are here longer than other but the integrity of the show is maintained. The same because it is an ensemble show and each character has a purpose and is identifiable and the fans relate to them. I think that was a wise decision early on to make the ensemble strong. So, it’s more about the stories and us collectively as characters than it is about one person lending a parade.

 Do you have a sense of mentor ship to the younger generations of actors that are coming to your show?

Joe Mantegna : I think there is a responsibility we have being what they call number one in the call sheet. It is a blessing to be in the work place like this, so my job is to instill that to everybody like they there are going to be problems, there are going to be things that there are going to occur and that’s life. Beyond all that, let’s try to make it an enjoyable experience as we can. Like Sinatra said, “you are only going to go around once in a life, but if you do it right, once is enough”

Does this show affect you mentally,physically?

Joe Mantegna: It just gives me more respect for the people who really do the job, because often I’m asked doesn’t it bother you to do a show that’s so disturbing. My answer is always No it doesn’t bother me because I know there are people who really do this job and I do the pretend version of it. So, for me to say it’s disturbing is disrespectful to anyone who really does it. I’m glad to portray them as realistically as possible. I’m grateful for the real men and women who do this job.

From all the characters that left the show who do you miss the most professionally?

Joe Mantegna: It’s like life. In other words, people come and go in your life. I’ve been around long enough to have lost some dear friends to death, and that’s final departure. In the work environment, there are going to be changes, people coming in and out, so yes I still have very fond feelings for all the people that contributed to the show but I also feel very lucky. However people come in it’s not like anybody replaces somebody. You can never be replaced, but you can make adjustments. It’s like sports team, a soccer team. One season you have 11 men, and the next season maybe it’s different. Hopefully the quality is the same, but it’s just different people doing it. You remember them having been there and thank them for their contribution but then you take happiness in what you have got now.

Which has been the worst/best unsub?

Joe Mantegna: Thomas hall was very good too. He was the reaper in a span of quite a few episodes, and it ultimately lead to the death of Thomas Gibson’s wife’s character. I think our 100th episode was kind of resolution of that story. And again, Thomas is a wonderful guy and a great actor. It was a very disturbing kind of arc that we did because it was one of the first times it got really personal.

Joe Mantegna : « En 49 ans de carrière, je n’ai pas eu l’impression de travailler un seul jour ! »

A 70 ans, Joe Mantegna fait souffler un vent de sagesse sur le tournage d’ « Esprits Criminels ». Calme et pondéré, avec trois cents épisodes et bientôt cinquante ans de carrière, l’acteur fait le bilan.

« Esprits Criminels » remporte un franc succès international depuis quatorze ans. Qu’est-ce qui distingue cette série pour lui permettre de remporter un tel suffrage ?

Joe Mantegna: Je pense que l’aspect primordial est l’esprit d’équipe et du partage que véhicule la série. La plupart des autres feuilletons tournent autour d’un unique personnage comme : « Dr House », « Magnum »…Lorsqu’il arrive quelque chose à ces personnages, cela marque le début de la fin. Dans « Esprits Criminels » certains sont là depuis plus longtemps et d’autres sont partis mais cela n’entame pas l’intégrité de la série dans la mesure où l’équipe reste soudée. Il y a un effort collectif à défaut d’un défilé qui tourne autour d’un seul héros.

 Vous êtes justement un peu le patriarche de cette équipe. Vous sentez-vous un peu responsable ?

Joe Mantegna: On a forcément une responsabilité lorsqu’on est en haut de la distribution. Mais c’est une bénédiction de travailler dans une atmosphère comme celle-ci. D’ailleurs mon rôle est de le rappeler même s’il y a parfois des contretemps et aussi des soucis comme partout. Mais il est important de continuer l’aventure dans l’harmonie. Comme le disait Frank Sinatra : « on ne fait qu’un tour dans l’existence mais s’il est réussi, il suffit amplement. »

 Quel est le criminel (unsub ou tueur en séries) qui selon vous se démarque des autres après douze ans ?

Joe Mantegna: C.Thomas Howell fut excellent. Il était George Foyet : l’ “éventreur”, celui qui est responsable de la mort de l’épouse de Hotch (Thomas Gibson). Dans la vie Thomas est un type super et un excellent acteur. C’était la première fois qu’un tueur en série s’attaquait à l’un d’entre nous

Parmi tous ceux qui ont quitté la série (Shemar Moore, Thomas Gibson…), quel acteur vous manque le plus ?

Joe mantegna: Cette expérience est à l’image de l’existence, les gens viennent puis quittent votre cercle. Je suis assez vieux pour avoir perdu pas mal d’amis chers et seule la mort représente un départ irréversible. Dans le milieu du travail, il y a des changements inévitables. J’ai toujours beaucoup d’affection pour tous ceux qui ont contribué à faire de la série ce qu’elle représente aujourd’hui. Et ceux qui sont arrivés ces derniers temps, ne remplacent personne. C’est comme dans une équipe de football, on s’adapte, on fait des ajustements mais personne ne remplace jamais personne.

Justement vous venez de fêter le 300 ième de la série, c’est la plus belle preuve ?

Joe Mantegna :Un véritable cadeau même ! L’année prochaine, je vais fêter mes cinquante ans de carrière et c’est passé comme un éclair ! Je ne sais rien faire d’autre qu’être acteur mais je suis toujours aussi enthousiaste et ravi de venir chaque matin sur le plateau depuis douze ans. Comme j’adore ce que je fais, depuis 49 ans, je n’ai même pas eu l’impression de travailler un seul jour de mon existence, c’est une chance inouïe !
