Kim Raver: “The season 15 of Grey’s Anatomy is remarkable” [Interview]

At 50, Kim Raver (Third Watch, 24…) has found the perfect balance between her personal and professional life. Recently and positively challenged while co-directing her first movie with her husband Manu Boyer: Tempting Fate, she is back on Grey’s Anatomy season 15 with her character for a love triangle that she feels as special…

How do you feel about the love triangle Owen-Teddy-Amelia?

Kim Raver: I think it’s an amazing storyline and we’re trying to make it different than any other love triangle. We live in 2019 and Caterina (Scorsone) who plays Amelia and I, we didn’t want to be woman against woman and who is going to get the man. We wanted to do something different, so we pitched it to the showrunner, and I think we’re finding a way now that is original. Teddy wants to have a partner to raise the baby that’s coming but she doesn’t want to break the relationship between Amelia and Owen so I think it’s a really interesting evolution on how this threesome is going to evolve. Also, with Teddy giving up so much by leaving Germany, what is her life going to look like now back at the hospital and her job also? That’s an interesting transition. It’s been great because I am working with Kevin McKidd and Caterina and we’re having a great time. The season 15 of Grey’s Anatomy is remarkable.

What do you think makes this show that great in longevity to the point that it’s airing now season fifteen?

Kim Raver: I think it’s really the human element of it. The writers, producers are able to keep a dynamic. Medically what’s happening is not what the story is about, it’s more a reflection on the emotional engine that is going on in each one of the characters. Shonda (Rhimes, the creator) has done an incredible job at reflecting what the world looks in our show. It always comes down to the human element and what we are all struggling with every day, what it is to love, what it is to be loved, what it is to feel like you’re failing or succeeding.

On a personal level what does this experience on: Grey’s Anatomy means for you compare to all the other shows and movies you’ve participated in ?

Kim Raver: I absolutely love to go to work every day. There is an ensemble. This is a very tight group of very talented actors. And it always come down to the writing. I feel like to be able to tell the stories that I get tot tell of Teddy who is a strong female and surgeon. She is complicated and she’s flawed. I love to be able to play all the nuances of this character and also be part of this ensemble.

How do you feel in 2019 on a personal and professional level about your life?

Kim Raver: I just feel very grateful where I am right now to be able to go to do a job that I love every single day. To be able to have my family with my husband and my two kids in good health. I really genuinely do feel just very happy with where I am. That doesn’t mean that I’m not kind of projecting on things that I do want to accomplish. I’m learning from my husband about directing, we directed a movie together (Tempting Fate).

How was that experience?

Kim Raver: It was incredible! We just took our lives skills as husband and wife and the way we raise our kids and we execute certain things in the household, then we put it to make it a movie together (Tempting Fate).

Did your relationship get even stronger because of this experience?

Kim Raver: Immensely. Of course, there were tensions, when you are producing, you have to make a movie and you have to make the hours, but we’ve already been through it in a day to day basis at home, so we already had those skills in collaborating together. So that’s something very exciting for me to be executing producing and making films and I think that come from being in Shondaland and see those possibilities.

A 50 ans, Kim Raver (Third Watch, 24 Heures Chrono…) a trouvé l’équilibre parfait entre sa vie privée et professionnelle. Apres avoir coréalisé avec son époux : Manu Boyer son premier film : Tempting Fate ( avec Alyssa Milano), l’actrice est de retour dans la quinzième saison de Grey’s Anatomy avec comme scenario un triangle amoureux qui n’est pas pour lui déplaire…

Que pensez-vous du triangle amoureux  Owen-Teddy-Amelia. Est-ce que cette intrigue est compatible avec votre éthique ?

Kim Raver: Je pense que c’est un scénario incroyable et que nous essayons de le rendre original par rapport a tous les autres triangles amoureux. Nous vivons en 2019 et Caterina (Scorsone) qui joue Amelia et moi, nous ne voulions pas d’un combat féminin stéréotypé a savoir qui va remporter le cœur d’Owen. Nous voulions faire quelque chose de différent, nous avons donc suggéré notre idée aux scénaristes et producteurs, et je pense que le résultat est assez inattendu et différent. Teddy souhaite avoir un compagnon pour élever son bébé mais elle ne veut pas rompre la relation entre Amelia et Owen,. Donc cela va donner un parcours sentimental à rebondissements. De plus, en quittant l’Allemagne, Teddy a vraiment tout plaquer. Cela laisse génère pas mal d’interrogations : à quoi ressemblera sa vie maintenant à l’hôpital et à son travail également ? C’est une transition intéressante. C’est génial car je travaille avec Kevin McKidd et Caterina et notre entente est parfait. La saison 15 de Grey’s Anatomy est remarquable

Selon vous, quelle est la clef de la longévité de cette série puisque vous tournez la saison quinze ?

Kim Raver: Je pense que c’est vraiment l’élément humain que privilégie les scénaristes qui est au cœur de cette fidélité. Les écrivains, les producteurs sont capables de garder une dynamique. L’aspect médical n’est que secondaire, ce qui prime ce sont les émotions de chacun de des personnages avec qui on vit chaque épisode. Shonda (Rhimes, la créatrice) a fait un travail incroyable pour refléter la société telle qu’elle existe aujourd’hui. Elle sait mettre en relief nos luttes quotidiennes, nos espoirs : ce que c’est  que d’aimer, d’être aimé, les hauts et les bas liés au succès comme aux échecs…

D’un point de vue personnel mais aussi professionnel, en quoi votre participation à cette série est-elle différente par rapport à toutes vos expériences passées ?

Kim Raver: J’adore me rendre chaque jour sur le tournage de : Grey’s Anatomy . Il y a une véritable unité au sein de notre équipe. C’est un groupe d’acteurs très uni et très talentueux. Et tout revient toujours à la qualité ‘écriture des scenarios. Teddy est une femme forte et qu’ exerce un métier passionnant et difficile, elle est chirurgien. Elle est compliquée, a des défauts, des qualités, des forces, des faiblesses. J’aime me surpasser en lui octroyant toutes ces nuances et de donner la réplique a cette équipe.

Vous venez de fêter vos cinquante ans, êtes-vous en accord avec votre parcours de vie ?

Kim Raver: Je suis très reconnaissante a l’existence de pouvoir exercer le travail que j’aime tous les jours. Et aussi d’avoir ma famille : mon mari et mes deux enfants en bonne santé Je suis en accord total avec mon existence actuelle. Cela ne veut pas dire que je n’ai pas des projets, des choses que je souhaite accomplir. Mon mari m’initie à la réalisation. Nous avons réalisé un film ensemble (Tempting Fate).

Comment s’est passée cette expérience ?

Kim Raver: Ce fut incroyable ! Nous avons juste utilisé nos compétences de vie en tant que mari et femme et la façon dont nous élevons nos enfants en les exécutant dans la réalisation de ce film. Nous avons appliqué notre méthode sur le plan privé dans le domaine professionnel.

Votre relation est-elle devenue du coup   encore plus forte et soudée ?

Kim Raver: Immensément. Bien sûr, il y avait des tensions, quand vous produisez, vous devez faire un film et vous devez faire de longues heures, mais nous avons déjà vécu cela quotidiennement à la maison, donc nous avions déjà ces compétences de collaboration acquises. C’est donc quelque chose de très stimulant pour moi de produire et réaliser, passer derrière la caméra et je pense que  l’exemple de Shonda Rhimes n’y est pas pour rien !
