Nathan Fillion : « Je viens de faire découvrir Paris à ma nièce ! »

 

Nathan Fillion about his new TV Show The Rookie: “Becoming a cop after 40? I find that fascinating and scary!”

“ A character show about cops!” that’s what defines  The Rookie, Nathan Fillion’s new show and regular return on TV after Castle. Based on true events, The Rookie (already sold in 160 countries) follows John Nolan, who decides in his forties to become the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Department.  Nathan Fillion uses his subtle sense of humor, is likable and rough at the same time. He juggles like always between comedy, drama and action with elegance. The Rookie will start on October 16^th on ABC.

What was about :”The Rookie” that decided you to play the role?

Nathan Fillion: To be honest, the first and foremost fact is that it was created by Alexei Hawley. I’ve never looked at my phone and seen a text from Alexei and thought:” oh that must be bad!”. He always has something great going on. As we started assembling the project, more people got interested and all of the necessary elements got together for a recipe for success. You never know what people are going to love and when but I felt we have all the right pieces here.

What about the story itself?

N.F.: The concept that stood out to me is that couples staying together is no longer the norm. Divorce is now the norm and that is not something we were talking ten, fifteen years ago, getting divorce and lives were changing entirely. Now I see men in my own age, women in my own age starting families, new jobs, their entire life changes. This mid life transition is now a norm. This is the new way things happen.

Did you have such an experience yourself?

N.F.: This is the nature of my job. I remember when I decided to become an actor, people were telling me:” now your job is looking for a job, you are not going to stay employed a lot of time.” But I’ve been super fortunate to have had long term employment. Every time I take a job, there is something very entirely different about it. If I weren’t doing this, I could teach acting for film and television. And I also think I would be a great captain for a cruise.

How different did you wanted this project to be from Castle and did you wish to keep some similarities?

N.F.: What I’m excited about this new program is the fact that there is real drama, real comedy and is a little bit more reality based. Castle existed in a little bit of imagination land. This is real stuff!

The show is based on a cop that wishes to remain anonymous. What is your opinion on his journey and cops in general?

N.F.: Just by virtue that their job starts when something goes terribly wrong and when someone dial 911.  to later in life to say: “this is my calling!” I find that fascinating and also scary. I would prefer to go the fireman route.

What kind of training did you do?

N.F.: I did some gun training which I found very useful.  I like knowing that everybody I’m working with actor wise, has been trained by an LAPD officer with a safe handling of a weapon. Going on set and to hand guns to untrained civilians and pretend like they’ve been trained is horrifying and dangerous. What was important for me is that I can look at my partners and totally trust them to be safe.

Did you have enough of a break between the two shows to reenergize?

N.F.: Yes, I had time to relax a little bit, reflect a little bit, pursue some of my own personal interests. But there is so long that you can without doing what you love and I’m fortunate enough to love my job.

What is it like to shoot in Hollywood?

N.F.: I remember the first time I was on Hollywood Boulevard, I had just moved here, it was kind of a not so great place to be, but they improved it a lot. I remember the first time I was on the walk of fame and the Chinese theater, it was neat to be in the middle of the street recently working. I moved here in 1997!

How was your reaction when Castle got cancelled and do you think it was kind of abrupt?

Abrupt….it was eight years and I do think about it of course! There is no way that a show gets cancelled and everybody is going to be super happy about it. I have a different perspective. I only think about the time I had, the people I met. I had an incredible time on Castle, a lot of fun stories. I think we did a good job, met good people and it moves me onto other incredible opportunities. I’ve had a lot of TV Shows cancelled. It’s never exciting to cancel a show however I think Castle had an amazing run and I don’t regret anything.

And you are ready for another eight years?

N.F. :Let’s see what happens….

Après que  Castle  se soit arrêté en 2016, Nathan Fillion revient dans la peau d’un flic débutant qui passé la quarantaine décide de prendre un virage à 180 degrés dans :  The Rookie .Rencontre avec Nathan à Beverly Hills alors que le premier épisode la série sera diffusé aux USA sur la chaine ABC le 16 octobre 2018 et dans quelques mois sur une chaine française.

Plus de deux ans après l’arrêt de : « Castle », vous revenez en tant que vedette de la série : « The Rookie ». Pourquoi cette série plus qu’une autre ?

Nathan Fillion : Je vais être honnête, il n’y a qu’un élément qui m’a décidé de me lancer dans cette nouvelle aventure : Alexi Hawley ! C’est lui qui était le producteur de :  Castle  et il ne m’a jamais texté un projet pour rien ! Aussi avec lui et le reste de l’équipe ainsi que la chaine américaine ABC, tous les ingrédients semblent être en place pour une recette vouée au succès. Il faut rester humble et il est vrai que l’on ne pas prévoir ce que les téléspectateurs vont aimer ou pas mais tout est en place pour que cela marche !

Pour vos fans, peut-on dire que : The Rookie  sera une série bien différente de :  Castle  ?

N.F. : Il y aura toujours une bonne dose de comédie et aussi d’éléments dramatiques mais  The Rookie  est une série plus réaliste. Elle est inspirée d’un véritable policier et je l’ai évidemment rencontré. C’est toujours captivant et impressionnant d’apprendre le nombre de défis auxquels ces hommes doivent faire face au quotidien. La série dépeint cela parfaitement. Décider d’affronter ce danger au milieu de son existence est quand même assez fascinant.

 

Quel est l’élément qui vous a attiré dans le concept du scénario ?

N.F. : Cette idée qu’une existence puisse être complètement bouleversée à la quarantaine par un changement professionnel, un divorce…Au temps de mes grands-parents, tout était assez linéaire. Mais de nos jours, à mon âge (47 ans) il arrive souvent de fonder une famille, de changer de travail…Cette transition qui survient pour beaucoup au milieu de leur existence, est devenue une norme. Et ce personnage dans « The Rookie » qui réalise son rêve de devenir policier à Los Angeles à plus de quarante ans est carrément représentatif de cette tendance actuelle.

Pourriez-vous faire partie de ceux qui justement bouleverse toute leur existence pour prendre une direction totalement différente ?

N.F. : En fait c’est la nature même de mon travail que de changer de cap a chaque rôle différent donc c’est bien avantageux. Malgré cela dans ma profession on est plus souvent au chômage qu’employé donc des le départ il faut savoir qu’être acteur c’est surtout passer son temps à auditionner! Mais pour répondre à votre question j’aimerais bien être professeur d’art dramatique et aussi capitaine de navires de croisières !

Et vous adorez la plongée, pourquoi pas instructeur ?

N.F. :J’adore cela, je suis même allé à Tahiti il y a quelques mois mais c’est beaucoup trop de responsabilités !

Castle  s’est arrêté de manière un peu abrupte, n’avez-vous pas été déçu ?

N.F. :Il est toujours difficile de voir une série s’arrêter et il n’y a pas de fin idéale pour les fans comme pour l’équipe. C’est toujours un passage délicat. « Castle » est une série qui a duré de nombreuses années donc pour ma part, j’en suis extrêmement ravi et reconnaissant. Et honnêtement après huit ans d’existence, je ne considère pas cela comme abrupt ! Ce fut une période exceptionnelle de mon existence.

Etait-il important pour vous de faire une pause ?

N.F. : Oui j’avais vraiment envie de prendre un peu de temps pour retourner notamment chez moi au Canada et d’être auprès ma famille et revoir pour la première fois tous mes amis de lycée, j’étais très ému.

 

Cela a dû vous permettre de réaliser le chemin parcouru ?

N.F. :Nous avons tourné une scène pour :  The Rookie  sur Hollywood Boulevard et je me souviens avoir foulé cet endroit alors que je venais juste de débarquer à Los Angles en 1997, j’ai en effet été pris d’une sacrée émotion en tournant à cet endroit vingt et un an plus tard !

Qu’avez-vous fait   cet été ?

N.F. : Nous avons débuté le tournage en juillet mais auparavant j’ai souhaité faire découvrir Paris, Londres et Amsterdam là ma nièce qui rêvait depuis longtemps de venir en Europe !
