Star Trek Discovery: Ethan Peck: “I didn’t know I was auditioning for Spock at first!”[Interview]

Ethan Peck, grandson of the legendary Gregory Peck, will be the ninth actor to portray the famous Mr. Spock of Star Trek. At 32, the actor is in “Star Trek: Discovery” broadcast on CBS all Access

 

Can you tell us how you got the iconic role of Spock?

Ethan:  I was sent an audition for a mysterious role on Star Trek. I almost didn’t make the tape because I thought it was, the size was very challenging, very sort of abstract. It was an alien losing his mind in a cave, and in about a month into the process I’d be called back and back and back. I just go to a spot and was totally hangover. And then I had it and I was terrified and thrilled, you know, it’s kind of thing dream for as an actor you got to have this kind of iconic role in this kind of exposure.

 You mentioned something unusual happened for the last call back?

Ethan:   I went into the, for Alex Kurtzman, the show runner and I like blacked out. I don’t remember like any of the day, but I think it went really well. And I liked having dinner, a celebratory dinner with my buddy and I got a call from my manager. He’s like, “I got bad news about star Trek.” And I was like, “Oh, what?” And he’s like, “The microphone completely malfunctioned, and you have to go back in and do it tomorrow.” And as an actor, that’s the last thing you want to do is go and do it all over again.  My agent has made jokes like that before where he’s like “Just joking. You booked it.” And I was like waiting for him to tell me it was a joke but I  really had to go back and do it again.

There’s going to be millions of fans checking your version. How do you prepare for that and how daunting is it for you?

Ethan  : Extremely, of course, everyone wants to be liked. You always want to create something that people will love and appreciate, but that’s just unrealistic. I mean not everybody’s going to be on board and that’s totally okay. And I think it’s been sort of an exercise of making space for opinions other than my own, our own right. We all love and  poured our souls, I think into this season. I’m following Sonequa in her footsteps after the first season. And you just have to accept that people have other opinions and that’s totally okay. And you got to appreciate them too, because if there weren’t that conflict and contention, it wouldn’t be real, you know, it wouldn’t make any sense. So, you just sort of suck it up and get ready.

Do you feel as an actor you have to make him your own?

Ethan : He is very iconic, very loved. I think in the beginning I, there was a lot of trepidation, and I was very afraid to make strong choices when we’re the other because right. He’s so limited in his expression. And so, you have to really find nuances and especially in this season I think we’re dealing with his human side and a conflict of the human versus Logan as she did in the first season. And so very carefully and with a lot of love and care and a lot of research and I just had the most supportive team around me. Little encouraged me and made me feel brave. And yes, just a sort of a nonstop focus on throughout the season 

  What state do you feel like your Spock is in? How different is he? What is it about him that is not Leornard’s Spock?

Ethan: I think that Spock to me is, wise based on the first thing that comes to mind when I think Spock and wisdom I think as a result of dealing with pain and accepting that there was pain in life and a living with it. Just as I said before, making space for the uncomfortable opinions or energies that come at you. And I think my Spock is, he swings a little bit more on the vacillations greater between emotion and logic, whereas with Leonard’s Spock, I think that, and you, what’s the word for it? amplitude.

Ethan Peck, petit-fils du légendaire Gregory Peck, sera le neuvième acteur à se glisser dans la peau du célèbre Mr. Spock de Star Trek. A 32 ans, l’acteur qui est donc dans « Star Trek :Discovery » diffusé sur Netflix  avoue avoir l’impression d’avoir gagné au …loto !

Comment s’est passée l’audition pour ce rôle ?

Ethan: En fait on m’a envoyé à une audition pour un rôle mystère pour Star Trek sans me préciser lequel. Je n’avais même pas envie d’envoyer de vidéo d’essai car je trouvais cela un peu trop abstrait. Je devais prétendre être un extra-terrestre qui perdait la raison bloqué dans une cave ! Mais finalement je l’ai fait et j’ai été rappelé plusieurs fois. Et puis j’ai finalement su de quel rôle il s’agissait et que je l’avais décroché. J’étais à la fois complètement fou de joie et aussi terrifié car c’est un personnage mythique, mais j’avais vraiment l’impression d’avoir gagné au loto !

Il parait qu’au dernier moment, il y a eu un couac ?

Ethan: Oui . Mon manager qui a l’habitude de me faire des blagues m’a dit après la dernière audition avec le producteur Alex Kurtzman et alors que j’étais en plein diner pour fêter cela : « j’ai une mauvaise nouvelle pour toi, tu dois y retourner encore ! ». Je n’y croyais pas mais il m’a lancé : « Non le micro n’a pas fonctionné et il faut que tu y retournes demain ». Et il n’y a rien de plus terrible pour un acteur que de recommencer à ce stade mais ce coup-là ce n’était pas une blague !

C’est un rôle que Leonard Nimoy personnifie depuis des décennies. Ne craignez-vous pas les comparaisons ?

Ethan:On découvre Spock dans une période différente de sa vie lorsqu’il était plus jeune. Mais créer un personnage auquel tout le monde va adhérer est irréaliste. Je sais que tout le public ne va pas forcément suivre mais je m’y attends. En tant qu’acteurs, nous avons tous donné le meilleur de nous-même, corps et âmes pour cette seconde saison de la série. Il faut accepter les opinions des uns et des autres sinon on se coupe complétement de la réalité.

Il sera donc bel et bien différent du Mr Spock de Leonard Nimoy ?

Ethan: La première chose qui vient à l’esprit lorsqu’on pense au Mr Spock de Leonard Nimoy, c’est sa sagesse. Or là il va devoir affronter certaines douleurs et donc il y a plus de place pour vaciller davantage entre l’émotion et la logique.

Quel est l’élément le plus difficile pour se mettre dans la peau de Mr Spock ?

Ethan: Il est tellement adoré par les fans de Star Trek que j’avais un peu peur au départ de faire des choix audacieux quant à mon interprétation. Spock est très limité dans ses expressions. Il faut donc trouver les nuances qui sont justes dans son visage, sa voix…Il apparait dans cette version avec un aspect beaucoup plus humain donc après pas mal de recherches ,beaucoup d’amour et aussi une certaine prudence, j’essaie de lui apporter une dimension un peu différente …
